Berlin Summer 2011
Tour of Berlin

After a good night sleep, we got ready for the day ahead. Today was the first encounter of a German breakfast: deli meat, rolls, peaches, strong coffee, and multi-vitamin orange juice. Different. As we all met in front of the hostel we got geared up for our tour of Berlin. We piled into the UBahn to Alexanderplatz where we took the SBahn to Henscher-Market where we met our tour guide, David. He began the tour by telling us the 18th century/ 19th century history of Berlin. Then we started our four hour tour:

standing in front of the Spree River with the Protestant Church in the background …

touching the bullet holes from World War II …

standing in the same spot Adolf Hitler stood while he gave a speech to the city of Berlin …

Kenzie and I in front of the Protestant Church …

standing in front of Humboldt University …

Brandenburg Gate the symbol of the city of Berlin …

walking inside the Holocaust Memorial (the symbolism was breathtaking) …

standing above what use to be Adolf Hitlers bunker (this is where he spent the final days of the war and the place he took his own life) …

there are many Berlin Bears around the city! They are the designated mascot! After a long day of touring the city we all wondered back to the hostel for a nap, skype date, or shower before our welcome dinner. Our dinner was held in a part of Berlin that was remolded after World War II because of the bombing raids the only thing that stood after the bombs was a church. The restaurant we ate at was an authentic German restaurant so of course I had to try the Schnitzel! Doesn’t it look yummy?!
